Loraine James is a London-based electronic producer, composer, and vocalist whose music sits in the unstable space between IDM, experimental club music, ambient, glitch, R&B, drill, pop, and intimate self-portraiture. Emerging with early releases such as Detail and Button Mashing, she found wider recognition through her Hyperdub debut For You and I, a deeply personal record that channelled joy, anxiety, fear, sensuality, queerness, and the architecture of North London into fractured rhythm and vivid electronic texture. Across the Nothing and Hmm EPs and the 2021 album Reflection, James sharpened a language built from restless percussion, sudden softness, warped vocal fragments, and club music that often feels like it is arguing with itself in real time.

Since then, her catalogue has widened without losing that nervous, human centre. Under the alias Whatever The Weather, she explored a more ambient and impressionistic side of her work on Whatever The Weather and Whatever The Weather II, while Building Something Beautiful For Me reimagined the music and spirit of composer Julius Eastman through her own fractured electronic lens. Gentle Confrontation brought her closer to song form, memory, collaboration, and emotional directness, before Detached From The Rest Of You pushed further into what she has called an “IDM pop star” space, foregrounding her own voice alongside collaborators including Sydney Spann, Tirzah, Anysia Kym, Miho Hatori, Alan Sparhawk, Le3 bLACK, and Fyn Dobson. Across her work, James feels like one of electronic music’s most quietly radical voices: technically restless but never cold, able to turn self-doubt, city life, grief, desire, disconnection, and tenderness into music that flickers between the club, the bedroom, and somewhere harder to name.
