Ali Douglas Newman (born Jason Douglas Newman on July 30, 1977), better known by his stage name Brother Ali, is an American rapper, community activist, and member of the Rhymesayers Entertainment hip hop collective. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, he has albinism, a condition characterized by the absence of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes. Brother Ali's discography showcases his evolution as an artist committed to addressing social issues through his music. His debut album, Rites of Passage (2000), was followed by Shadows on the Sun (2003), which garnered critical acclaim for its insightful lyrics and soulful production. He continued this trajectory with Champion EP (2004), The Undisputed Truth (2007), Us (2009), The Bite Marked Heart (2012), Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color (2012), All the Beauty in This Whole Life (2017), and Secrets & Escapes (2019). In 2025, Brother Ali released his latest album, The Travelers, further solidifying his place in contemporary hip hop. Throughout his career, Brother Ali has been an outspoken advocate for social justice, often addressing themes such as racial inequality, poverty, and personal introspection in his lyrics. His activism extends beyond music; he has participated in various community initiatives and educational programs, using his platform to inspire and empower others. Ali’s activism extends beyond music, and in 2016, his commitment to global dialogue led him to Iran to speak at a conference about Black Lives Matter. However, what began as an educational trip turned into an international ordeal when his performance of “Uncle Sam Goddamn” was unexpectedly broadcast across Iranian state TV. The move angered underground Iranian rappers, who face government repression, and simultaneously made him a target of right-wing groups in the U.S., falsely accusing him of extremist ties. His publicized whereabouts led to death threats, and when he tried to leave Iran, he found himself stranded in an airport for three days without money, food, or communication. Upon his return to the U.S., he discovered he had been placed on an SSSS security watchlist, leading to repeated interrogations and invasive searches during his travels. With the help of a lawyer and a mysterious benefactor he refers to as a “saint,” Ali was eventually able to clear his name. In addition to his musical and activist endeavors, Brother Ali launched "The Travelers Podcast," where he explores life's journeys with cultural, spiritual, and thought leaders from around the world. He currently resides in Istanbul, Turkey. Brother Ali's contributions to hip hop and his commitment to activism have solidified his place as a significant figure in contemporary music and social movements.
